Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes needs additional aerial weapons, and the team may look to add one in the NFL Draft later this month.
According to Bookies.com, University of Texas wide receiver Adonai Mitchell is the favourite to be taken by Kansas City with the final choice in the first round of the draft, with +400 odds.
Mitchell recently finished his senior season with 55 receptions for 845 yards and 11 touchdowns. While his numbers may not appear particularly outstanding, he ran a 4.34 40-yard sprint at the NFL Scouting Combine, and at 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds, he also has fantastic size.
The 21-year-old began his collegiate career at the University of Georgia, and in his freshman season, he caught 29 passes for 426 yards and four scores. The following year, he played in just six games and logged nine catches for 134 yards and three touchdowns before transferring to Texas.
The Chiefs have tried to address their needy receiving corps this offseason, signing former Arizona Cardinals wide out Marquise Brown.
However, with Rashee Rice’s status for 2024 up in the air due to some current legal issues, Kansas City may have to double down on its passing game in the draft.
If Rice is unavailable for next season, the Chiefs won’t have a whole lot of proven talent outside of Brown at the position. Yes, Kansas City still has tight end Travis Kelce, but wide receiver was a point of weakness for the Chiefs in 2023, and if they don’t have Rice in 2024, it will once again be a weak area.
That’s why Kansas City may very well focus on adding another receiver (or more) in the draft later this month, and Mitchell seems like a fine candidate for Mahomes.
The Chiefs have won back-to-back Super Bowl championships, and no team in the Super Bowl era has ever three-peated.
In order for Patrick Mahomes and Co. to make that happen, they may need some more talent on the offensive side of the ball.
